What Does Your Sign Say?

By Cathy Williams | posted 05/03/2007

And Jesus said to them, “Be careful and guard against all kinds of greed. Life is not measured by how much one owns.” (Luke 12:15, NKJV)

Lately I have seen many people standing on corners of the street with signs asking for food, money, or a job.

I thought about these people and how I sometimes act towards them. Sometime I judge them and think if I give them money they are only going to get drunk. I even think they most likely have more money than I have so I won't give them anything. Or I have worked hard for what I have so I won't give it to someone else.

Unfortunately I do this a lot. Sometimes I need to remember that the Lord has given me my job and everything I have.

I wonder what some of our signs would say if we had to stand on a corner …

  • “I have enough, but I want more.”
  • “I work, but I am still struggling to feed my children, keep my car, and pay my rent every month.”
  • “I have more than enough, but I am afraid to lose what I have.”
What if, instead we held up signs that said:
  • “You need Jesus.”
  • “I will pray for you.”
  • “I will give to those who are in need, even if it's just time.”
  • “I will seek the lost and show them the love of Jesus.”
  • “No more judging.”
We could take the “wants” off ourselves, and put the “needs” of others first. We could love just as Jesus loves.
