It's Incomprehensible!
By Char Forslund | posted 12/20/2007
"While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in strips of cloth and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." (Luke 2:6-7)
Incomprehensible: a very big word to describe how the supernatural fact of the Incarnation of God perplexed me and challenged me mentally, spiritually, and theologically for some time.
Incarnation: the fact that God subjected Himself, His power, glory, honor, wisdom and control to be born of a human mother and enter the totally human body of a baby boy.
Incomprehensible! As in, "I don't get it!", "I can't wrap my head around that.", "I keep trying, but I really don't understand it." EXACTLY! In my humanity even as I place myself daily under God and Grace, I am not able to comprehend or fully understand the marvel of the Incarnate God. What God calls me to is acceptance. Just like the infallible facts of the Creation of the world, or Jonah in the belly of the whale, or the feeding of the five thousand, or Mary, a virgin, giving birth to the baby Jesus, or the Holy Spirit living in me and through me today! I must trust absolutely in the God I believe to be always and eternally true and accept it...the Incarnation. More than any other proclamation that the Bible makes, this is the top of the pile. This is the statement and event that makes it possible for me to commit my life to serve Him eternally. My promise of heaven relies totally on acceptance of this unique and incomprehensible event in history, the Incarnation.
Like many of you, I love to put out a display of the nativity on Christmas. In a few months we will walk through the days of Holy Week and grieve over the passion and death of Jesus and then break into rejoicing at the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. In between there are 33 years of God living among us as a human. The Incarnation, incomprehensible but TRUE. Jesus, totally God and still totally human.
As I look at the baby, asleep on the hay this Christmas I need to think and pray about my understanding and acceptance of God's marvelous, intended plan unfolded for me in Scripture...from Genesis through the Revelation. I need to examine His life, what He said and did during those 33 years and seek diligently to know Him more.
Have I allowed the baby, Jesus, to outgrow the manger?
I invite you to join me in the quest for understanding and belief.
Love and Joy!
