Change

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8
I have felt like 'change' is a common theme in my life lately. Last night, I sat up and watched Barack Obama be overwhelmingly elected the next president of The United States because of his message of 'change'. I have experienced change in Creekside as we look for our next pastor. I have seen change in how I drive my car because of gas prices. I have seen change in my two little boys as they get older. I have seen change in the coaching staff for the WSU Cougar football team. And a Dick's cheeseburger has gone from $1.30 to $1.40.
I like change, but I would be lying if I said that I always like it. I can't seem to even go to Red Robin for dinner and order something different. And so I ask myself what it is that makes me uncomfortable about change? Regardless of the situation, it's the uncertainty. It's not being able to tell you what tomorrow is going to look like. I like to know what tomorrow is going to look like. It makes me feel good. One of the last questions Beth and I ask each other each night is, "What are you doing tomorrow?" But while change is not always easy for me, it doesn't mean that it can't be good.
We live in a culture right now that is going through a lot of change. No matter who you are, it's happening. So really, it becomes how I handle this change. Everything changes. A life without change isn't realistic. Nor would I even want one.
But here is the great thing about change: God doesn't. No matter what changes in our world, our country, our lives, our family, our jobs, our portfolios, yes even to the Cougar football team and Dick's cheeseburger pricing – God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow (that day I like to know so much about). And that I can invest in.
We are told many times in the Bible not to worry about tomorrow, uncertainty, or change. Here are a few of the verses I keep coming back to:
"Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough worries of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding." Proverbs 3:5
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:8
"God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" Numbers 23:19
So today, admist all of the change that is going on in my life and around me, I thank God for the constants in my life. And I also thank him for the changes that will affect my tomorrow. For He is in control of all things, his vision is immeasurably bigger than mine, and He is good.
