Reflection on Psalm 51

I think of David as a superhero in the Old Testament. He took down a giant with a single stone. He showed tremendous restraint in honoring God’s appointment of Saul as king by not killing him even though Saul tried to kill him. He was a great and mighty warrior.

While David sought God in the big battles, he took his eyes off God in the quiet of his palace. Instead of leading his soldiers to battle, David decided to relax and stay at home, leading to adultery and then murder of one of his committed and loyal servants. So, while David knew God’s heart and was loved by God, he too fell into sin.

And what about repentance?  At first, David used his own hand to cover up his sin.  But, God confronted him through the prophet Nathan. Instead of hardening his heart, David repented with all his heart.  David’s power was not because he was a superhero but because he was a man after God’s own heart, and could repent of sin.

God is the only superhero. We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God. It is by God’s grace that we are saved.  It is through an open heart and repentance that His grace saves us and his glory can shine through us forever.

Below are a few verses of David's prayer in Psalm 51, used as a prayer of repentance in churches around the world. You can read David’s full story from 1 Samuel 16 through all of 2 Samuel and the first two chapters of 1 Kings, and in the more than 70 psalms David wrote.

Create in me a clean heart, God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit.

-Psalm 51:10-12
