Awesome God

I hurt. I hurt from the injuries I’ve received over the years. Yet I know that the human body has been wonderfully made.

Psalm 139:13-14

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,    I know that full well."

A few years ago, I was watching some young adults play Frisbee. They had perfect bodies. They were effortlessly catching and throwing the Frisbee.

The nerves on the bottom of their feet were sensing pressure and sending the information to the brain. At the same time the brain was sending signals back down to make this muscle tighten up, and that muscle relax. The feet and the ankles are made to flex to match the terrain. As the players’ bodies would lean out to the side with the arms stretched out in the same direction to catch the Frisbee, their legs would automatically move so they wouldn’t fall.

You may not know this, but there is a muscle surrounding the eye. This is so when you tilt your head, the eye stays level to the horizon. This also helps with balance, along with the three semicircular canals in your inner ear. These and the nerves in the neck are all sending information to the brain.

Of course these young people weren’t thinking about any of this. All they cared about was having fun with their friends, catching and throwing the Frisbee to each other. All of the muscle action was fully automatic. This shows how wonderfully God created us. We have an Awesome God!

Our hearing is another thing that is amazing. For many years, I have been living with an audio process disorder. For most of my life, I have had very good hearing, but I didn’t always know what I was hearing. I could not hear the beat to music, with very few exceptions where the beat was very strong.

Once during Christmas Eve service, there were small kids up front singing. As they were singing, they started clapping to the beat of the music. And they were doing it with perfect timing. To me, that was absolutely amazing. They were hearing things I couldn’t.

The brain is also very amazing. Not only can it do all of this and more, but it’s also capable of thought, dreams, creativity, and problem-solving. And not only that, we can also communicate about all of this. We can dream of things that are real, and dream of things that are not real nor will ever be real. Then we can tell these stories to kids, friends and others to entertain them. We can dream about how we would like our home to be and either do it ourselves, or pay someone to do it.

Here’s a crazy thing my nephew dreamed up.  In 1990, I went with Karen to New Orleans to visit my folks.  I asked my youngest nephew what he would like me to bring back for him.  He said an alligator. OK. So while down there I bought a real alligator head. When I got home, I asked my neighbor to make a wooden mount and to mount the head on it. My nephew loved it!

We are God’s master pieces. And as much as we think we know a lot about the human body, there is still so much we don’t know. The pain in my leg has been hurting for a long time. The doctors know what’s wrong, but don’t know how to fix it. We are wonderfully made.
